Bui Doi means “dust of life” and is an expression used in reference to people of mixed heritage (Vietnamese and ‘other’).
While the ethnicities of the subjects in this portrait series may be ambiguous (and some are of exclusively Vietnamese parentage), we are all survivors of war.
I myself have been told that I am half Vietnamese, but DNA tests have indicated otherwise.
In this series, I use “Bui Doi” to pay tribute to our accomplishments outside the legacy of conflict and bloodshed.
